He did his first two years taking general classes of all kinds, like Meteorology.
He then went on a LDS mission to France for two years, which help him in learning and majoring in the French language.
Between his Jr. and Senior year he tried out for the Aviation dept. at Hill Air Field, but found that because his vision was 40/20 that he did not qualify, but instead qualified for the Navigators training (which is the desk behind the cockpit).
He graduated as an Honored Graduate (only 4 at that time) and was at the top of his class.
Towards the end of his training he found that they had no openings for Navigators anyways, and because he had majored 1st in Language Intelligence and 2nd in Education Specialist he was given the opportunity to be the Senior Editor/Public affairs officer at the Detachment News, which got him out of any 'drills or marching'. This gave him the opportunity to decline 'regular' duty and instead he choose to only be a 'reserves officer'.
He had earned the Woodrow Wilson fellowship scholarship which paid all of his tuition fees and many books and living, (full ride).
They gave him a deferment to not go on active duty, but to instead go to UC Berkeley CA. for 1 year studying French Lit. getting a Masters, and later got an endorsement from the LDS Church to become a Chaplin for the LDS faith serving in this capacity in the Air Force. This bumped him up from 2nd Lieutenant to 1st Lieutenant.
He left active duty as a Captain and later in the reserves became a Major, and ended as a Lieutenant Colonel before becoming inactive.
I am proud of my dad, and I love how he didn't make it a total career out of the armed forces, (he likes this too) but he instead became an Honored man, while still raising a large successful family, and doing things he loves like, Real Estate, Construction building and Investments.
He taught French at BYU University when he was first married, and served as an LDS Bishop, while I was very young, and then did Real Estate Investments the rest of his life, which included owning his own large Real Estate Company! , with employees etc. and becoming a 'Real Estate Broker' the rest of his life. He still managers his dozens of properties, all over the State of Utah, today.
Although we have had our differences from time to time, I can't help but focus on all his positives.
Though doing this, I found that LOVE is what matters in life, and through my kindness towards my father... no matter what his choices in life were or are, that I become, and am, a much bigger and better 'lovely person' for showing that RESPECT and love and kindness toward my parent, no matter what.....and I am the one who ends up benefiting, by having an awesome person in my life for what good strengths my father does have!!
Again, recently he went to the UTAH SUMMER GAMES, just this last weekend, for a second time this year, for some more events and AGAIN he took home WINNING MEDALS! He brings home Gold, Silver and Bronze metals often!!
This time around, he won 2 SILVER MEDALS and 1 BRONZE MEDAL in Track and Field. (he never ceases to amaze me!)
So, guess what??
I think my dad is 'the Tops' !! ♥
